INTERVIEW PREPARATION: Approach the interview like an employer!

As with most significant interactions in business, preparation is king.  And little else is more important than for the job interview….as we usually have one chance to make a lasting impression!  So here are a few helpful tips to make sure you nail it!

  • Know the company – research the firm and understand completely their niche market, products, services, competitors, recent news and financial information - if public.  If private, a simple Google search or intelligence gathered on LinkedIN can provide ample information.
  • Know the job – understand completely the position for which you are interviewing.  Review the job description in detail, paying close attention to duties, responsibilities, expectations, and background and education requirements. Because they have scheduled you for an interview, they already think you can do the job.  The question remains, “Do they want you to?” And knowing the job can make a big difference.
  • Ask impactful questions – this aspect of the interview is critical as it provides valuable information directly from an employee/manager and not just from the web!  Ask clarifying questions about how they conduct their business, what is driving their business and how they are responding.  Ask questions about the interviewer’s background and why they joined the company.  Ask questions about the top 3 challenges that need the most immediate attention and what might the first 6 months look like in this role. Ask questions about how they define success in this role, how soon they want to fill the position and what might be the next step.  Remember, you are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you!
  • Know your background – this sounds a little cheeky but it can be critical.  Make sure you can clearly and concisely elaborate on every bullet point on your resume, paying close attention to how achievements were accomplished, obstacles were overcome, how you collaborated with others on projects and how each position has challenged you to grow professionally. Don't be shy in this regard....the interview is a perfect opportunity to showcase your talent!
Finally, you should walk away from the interview with a complete and thorough understanding of the company, position and how accepting the job would impact positively your career and personal life. If this goal is only partially achieved, and you're interested in the opportunity, a second interview or phone conversation is a must!
